What’s the difference between recording, arranging, production, sound design, mixing, and mastering?

These terms describe different stages (and sometimes different roles) in making music. They often overlap, especially in independent music production, but each has a distinct focus.

Recording is the process of capturing audio.

Arranging is deciding how the song unfolds.

Production is the big-picture creative direction.

Sound design is creating or modifying the sounds themselves.

Mixing is making all recorded tracks work together.

Mastering is the final polish before release.

What’s a DAW?

A DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is software used to record, edit, produce, mix, and sometimes master audio. It's essentially the main workspace where music is created on a computer.

Think of a DAW as the music equivalent of:

  • Photoshop for images

  • Word for documents

Everything happens inside the DAW.

What equipment do i need?

The equipment required depends on the course you choose. Most production-focused classes require a laptop or tablet capable of running a digital audio workstation (DAW). If you're unsure what you'll need, please contact us, and we'll be happy to help ensure you have the appropriate equipment and software before your class begins.

I know nothing about music production. Can i still come?
